Breaking Out Into A Little Song And Dance

Up To The Highest Height!

When I was a child I couldn’t wait to become an adult. I used to dream about driving and going places big people would go and doing things big people would do.

But now I find myself spending most of my days clock watching, waiting to go home to peel off the grind and hustle and spill myself into my kids’ carefree world.

I long for the “Mr. Banks” moments.

You know? That stern, hardworking father from the Mary Poppins movie. In that final scene he arrives home — looking disheveled — and out of nowhere he hands his kids’ their mended kite and breaks out into song and dance with them.

“Oh, oh, oh!
Let’s go fly a kite
Up to the highest height!
Let’s go fly a kite and send it soaring
Up through the atmosphere
Up where the air is clear
Oh, let’s go fly a kite!”

Adulthood is a biological certainty. We all grow up, physically speaking.

But where does it say that we have to relinquish our innate need for senseless amusement?

I think if you’re finding yourself overburdened with emails and mortgage payments and strategy meetings and corporate bologna, then it might be time to momentarily immerse yourself in the exuberance of a little song and dance.
